Marathon Press Release

The run will be starting at 7:30am sharp out of Balance Gym Thomas Circle (111 14th Street NW). If you plan on running the entire thing, or running a portion at the beginning, please show up between 6:30 and 7am so that we can stay organized. We are asking that all runners (and anyone else who wants!) show their support of the run by donating at least $1 per mile that they run. You will have to opportunity to donate at the start/finish area, this website, and at one or two of the aid stations (for those wanting to meet up at those stations). Checks are preferred at the stations, and we will have donation sheets where you can put down credit card info as well.

The after party will be held at Balance Gym Thomas Circle from roughly 12:00pm to 2:00pm. There will be snacks, refreshments, music and sponsor booths, so please bring a friend or two and join the fun!

Course Info:

From Balance Gym Thomas Circle (the red marker), we’ll be heading south down 14th street. The white flags are markers for each 5 mile point, and the blue markers are specific locations where most of the aid stations will be located (there will be water, Gatorade and light snacks at most of the aid stations, water at all). If you are having trouble reading the streets, you will find a street list below in PDF form. Also, I have posted estimated times for when I’ll be hitting each aid station so that if people want to join in between stations they won’t have to wait for us for hours (a reminder that this run is two weeks after the Marine Corps Marathon…I may be moving a little slower than normal).

Marathon Streets List (PDF form)

Start @ Balance Gym Thomas Circle – 7:30am

Aid Station 1 @ Mile 5 – 8:20am

Aid Station 2 @ Mile 10 – 9:10am

Aid Station 3 @ lululemon Georgetown – 10:00am

Aid Station 4 @ Chevy Chase Running Company – 10:50am

Aid Station 5 @ Balance Gym Dupont – 11:30am

Aid Station 6 @ lululemon Logan – 11:50am

Finish @ Balance Gym Thomas Circle – 12:00pm

If you do plan on meeting at an aid station, please try to show up at least 20 minutes before the above time as these times are generalized and we could be moving slightly faster or slower. I also recommend that everyone choosing to run please bring your own water bottle and GU type fuel just to be safe. This is not a registered run, so we will just be running through the streets as a small group. We will obey traffic laws, avoid getting in the way of other pedestrians and please, please, please, no littering.

Info will be updated regularly, so check back as often as you can. If you have any questions or comments at all, please post them, email me, or call at any time. Lastly, a donation link will be up on this site very shortly for those wanting to show support.

Thanks so much everyone, make sure your calanders are marked for Saturday, November 14!

Riding With Courage Marathon

Just announced!

On Saturday, November 14th I will be running a self-designed marathon (a full 26.2 miles) through the streets of Washington, DC. The run will finish to a party with food, music, games and fun, and I would love it if anyone and everyone could make it out! People can run the entire run with me, run portions, sponsor miles or just come to the party.

I want to raise awareness for my ride across the country by doing a couple other crazy things, and getting people to come out and enjoy the festivities, meet me and my friends, meet sponsors and have a chance to get involved. As of today, the route is almost completely planned, aid stations are almost completely organized, a start/finish/party location is being negotiated. A band is excited to be there, and there will be some really great food to enjoy as well.

All those details will be sent out in the official press release at the end of September, but for now, please mark your calanders for Saturday, November 14th to come on out and join in the fun!

Thanks,

Josh

Welcome To Riding With Courage

Welcome everyone to the official Riding With Courage site/blog! Here you’ll find info on the ride, constant updates, pictures, videos events calendar and other fun “widgets:. You can comment, ask questions and support the cause through here as well. Please take the time to look around and please, support in any way you can!

Here’s what this is all about…

In April of 2010 I will be riding my bicycle across the US to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network and to raise awareness of activity, health and fitness in children and their families. That’s over 3000 miles from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC in 30 days (that’s just over 100 miles a day for those of you who struggle with math as much as I do…). Along the way, I’ll be hitting 10 Children’s Hospitals in 10 major cities where I’ll stop and hopefully entertain the kids and get some people together to join me on the road for a bit.

To help get people (and myself) psyched for the ride, I will be putting on two smaller events in Washington, DC. The first will be a marathon, a 26.2 mile run on the 14th of November ‘09 with a party afterwards. The second, a silent auction fundraiser on the 6th of February ‘10 where I will be lifting a total of 100,000 pounds over the course of two hours. Should be entertaining.

I love to challenge myself, to be active and to push my physical and mental limits. But I know that myself and my core group of friends that love to be active all the time are in a minority in the US. With obesity numbers rising faster each year, more and more schools cutting physical education classes, video games and snack foods becoming a staple in kids lives, and their parents stressed out about life and work, there are more and more excuses NOT to live healthy, active lives. I have dedicated my life to helping anyone and everyone take a stand on these negative, harmful habits that lead to major problems in life, and to turn things around. Make healthy choices when eating, get outside and be active whenever possible. This world has so much to offer, you don’t necessarily need a fancy gym, tons of supplements and medicine and high tech equipment. Just get out there and move around and you’ll immediately feel what it is I’m talking about. I hope to inspire people on this ride, I hope that people join me. I hope that people choose to walk, run, bike, anything really, rather than get in the car and drive. And what I really hope is that all children have every opportunity to be healthy, active, fit and happy; that we break the trend of bad health in this country for these children and they can pass that along to their children.

Please join me, whether it be on the bike, in the gym, through words or through donation; anything will be gladly accepted.

Thank you for your support!
